From April 1 this year all claims related to Covid-19 would be processed under the occupational disease category by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) but it is limited to certain professions only.

Socso contributors who make Covid-19 claim benefits are eligible for consideration but it is limited to occupations that are exposed to biological agents and also infections among healthcare workers.

The application will be processed as an occupational disease and the eligible insured person will receive benefits under the employment injury scheme or the disability scheme.

This covers temporary disability benefits, permanent disability benefits, retirement pension, disability pension and funeral management benefits.

Previously, all Covid-19 benefit claims have been processed as an employment injury, instead of an occupational disease, as it wanted to help affected workers.

Socso said the move to now process Covid-19 benefit claims as an occupational disease is in line with the announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that the country would begin its transition to the endemic phase beginning April 1, 2022.
