The Human Resources Ministry has proposed the implementation of e-Wages as a salary monitoring system and to make available centralised accommodation for foreign workers in the country.
This is widely seen as a move to improve the management of foreign workers and has received the assent of the Federal Cabinet on Jan 12 this year.
While the e-Wages initiative will be implemented soon to monitor prompt payment of wages to foreign workers, the ministry has another initiative on housing.
The Ministry said it is compulsory for employers to fully comply with the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 as a mandatory requirement to employ foreign workers.
Currently, the Ministry is in the midst of planning to regulate and introduce Centralised Labor Quarters (CLQ) within a span of five years for an effective and coordinated supervision of foreign workers.
In December last year, the Ministry approved 628 CLQs nationwide to accommodate 90,256 foreign workers. Another 360 CLQs are in the planning phase to accommodate 31,500 foreign workers.
