About 10 million formal sector workers nationwide are expected to benefit from broader social security coverage with the introduction of the Non-Work-Related Accident Scheme, or Lindung 24/7, under the LINDUNG Pekerja programme by the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO).
In a statement today, the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) said the new scheme offers round-the-clock protection — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — ensuring workers remain covered both during and outside of working hours.
According to KESUMA, the first reading of the Bill to amend the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, marking an important step towards strengthening the nation’s social protection system.
“Through Lindung 24/7, workers involved in accidents outside of working hours will continue to receive benefits such as medical treatment, temporary or permanent disablement assistance, dependants’ benefits, funeral expenses, and rehabilitation support,” the statement said.
The ministry added that the scheme not only safeguards the welfare of employees and their families but also helps reduce pressure on the public healthcare system by ensuring accident victims continue to receive financial and rehabilitation support.
KESUMA said the proposed amendments also take into account the changing employment landscape, including flexible and remote work arrangements that expose workers to risks beyond traditional workplaces.
Human Resources Minister, Steven Sim Chee Keong is expected to table the second and third readings of the Bill during the Parliament session in December.
According to the ministry, the initiative reflects the Madani government’s continued commitment to ensuring that no worker in Malaysia is left without protection, in line with its vision of inclusivity and social well-being for all.
